We're pretty sure the chances of experiencing a dropped call or missing text message are far greater than getting struck by lighting (about 1 in every 576,000), but scientists at Nokia have gone full force with lightning-detection software development anyway. The software transforms cellphones with Bluetooth, FM, tri-band GSM, Wi-Fi, or RFID into signal receivers to alert the user when lightning approaches. Nokia has already filed a patent application in the US and plans to target the technology toward outdoors enthusiasts, like joggers and golfers, who wish to practice lightning safety.
