In partnership with The Design Museum, the Prix Émile Hermès invites young European designers to design an object in the essence of Hermè--"an aesthetic that reflects the absolute mastery of the functionality of objects, a close relationship between tradition and modernity, tradition being constantly revived and reinterpreted in light of modernity, and innovation in everyday objects."
Entries are required to follow the theme "la légèreté au quotidien" or "everyday lightness" and must belong to the existing object families of or explore new categories that reflect the values of Hermès. Finalists will be given a €5,000 budget to create two prototypes of their design, which will be exhibited throughout Europe and published in an Hermès exhibition catalogue. €90,000 in cash prizes will be awarded with a heaping €50,000 for first place.
The jury committee includes Enzo Mari, Ingo Maurer, Hella Jongerius, Martí Guíxé, Marc Berthier, Ron Arad, Massimo Morozzi, Alfredo Häberli, and Hermès art directors Pierre-Alexis Dumas et Pascale Mussard. Registration ends on November 30, 2007.
