Winners for the 51st Annual Conference on Electron, Ion, and Photobeam Technology's Nanofabrication Bizarre/Beautiful Micrograph Contest (deep breath) have been announced! Irene Fernandez-Cuesta snagged "Best Electron Micrograph" with her polymeric dirt structure in the shape of Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, taken with a SEM LEO 1530.
We scoped out this year's winning entries after spotting an older, and most certainly stranger, image from 2005:
Nanotechnologist Kaito Takahashi's 15,000X magnified electron microscope photograph of an integrated circuit, resembling a cramped commode that even the tiniest of turdlets would clog, took the '05 title for "Most Bizarre."
