Locknesters are a new kind of Designer Toy. They are the result of a fascination with unconventional geometries and a desire to make toys that encourage interaction. They could be thought of as three-dimensional jigsaw puzzles—each model can be taken apart and assembled, used as a challenge to friends or a distraction from work.
Bear, seen here, is our first Locknesters available. His friends, Pup and TRex, will join in early 2017. Bear is 10.5" tall.
Design
Key to the design of Locknesters is an understanding of the way unconventional geometries relate to one another so that pieces can nest together and come apart. Three connection types are used—male/female, female/female and clamp—to form sturdy connections. During the design phase, the connection types are drawn on a digital model and then prototyped on a 3d printer.
Production
Producing high quality Designer Toys is our passion. We take pride in both designing and producing our toys. Locknesters are manufactured out of a nontoxic bioplastic. No chemicals are used during the surface smoothing process.
Fabrication/Finishing
Locknesters are produced in our Brooklyn headquarters using a blend of old and new manufacturing techniques. Models are digitally designed on the computer and then fabricated by a 3d printer.
Finish quality is extremely important to the success of a Locknester product. Coming off the printer, the pieces are rough and feel raw, so they undergo an extensive finishing process—sanding, tumbling, buffing—to achieve their smooth surface. Finally, each piece receives a water-based topcoat that helps seal and protect.
