There's nothing like a good old fashioned fight club to get people riled up! Today's highlight featured a debate between two fighters in a boxing ring in the design gallery. The moderator was Paul Hatch, the two fighters were Lee Silver and Phil Bereano, and the topic was "designing the new human." In this fight club there were only two rules, 1. there will be only one winner, and 2. there are no rules.

The fight was fierce, even ugly at times with lots of crowd interaction. The fight focused on stem cell research, cloning and of course dabbled in religeon. There was sweating, cursing, water chugging, hitting below the bealt and just as things couldn't get anymore intense someone in the crowd yelled "move to Canada!" Both fighters put on a strong, curageous fight but as rule number one goes there can only be one winner, and the crowd chose Lee Silver (pro stem cell research.) Check back later for photos.

Inventables put on a good presentation showing 10 examples of materials and technologies that can be used in a wide variety of applications. These included shape memory polymers, skin conduction, in mold decorations, gel magnets and other.  posted by stucon, core77

There has been a great turnout at this year's conference, a reported 600 attendees. The weather in Pasadena has not dissapointed aside from rain on the first day.

The conference kick off presentation by Chris Bangle, BMW Group Director of Design, set the tone for the days to follow. His speach was outstanding to say the least and and left him with a standing ovation, which was appropriate in the auditorium where the Emmy's are also held. He's anxiously awaiting a new breakthrough in design, comparing it to the golden age of magic when magicians were faced with revealed secrets, forcing them to push their craft to a whole new level of innovation.

Yesterday Jonah Becker, Scott Croyle, and Claude Zellweger of One & Co. held a great discussion on how to create a new design firm. They took us through the process in which they started One & Co. and offered honest revelations about the ups and downs they've experienced. They focused a lot on skills design schools don't prepare you for in the real world, specifically related to starting your own company and becoming an entepreneur.

Bill McDonough, of MBDC and author of Cradle to Cradle, gave an outstanding presentation at Art Center last night. The Q&A session might have lasted a bit too long, but his work and the topics discussed were eye opening. One stat that was thrown out there was that 80% of everything sold at Wal-Mart ends up in a landfill within two months. I assume this refers mostly to the packaging and not to the objects?

The Nike Unlimited Derby is a great addition to the conference this year. Since most IDers are big kids at heart, now that they have access to million dollar model shops they can finally make that pinewood derby car they always dreamed about! Check the photo gallery for more model shots.

And here's a view of the Core77 booth setup process, in all our glory!

Eastman Chemical is debuting their new "pebbles" here. These are jewel-like samples of cellulose plastics showing off different colors and properties. Best are the scented pebbles - embedded scents in the material will last for over 20 years. The samples and the packaging were designed by The Brewery in London.

Also new is the Think3 web site. Recently revamped to appeal to designers AS WELL AS engineers!  posted by stucon, core77

I'm in the Design Gallery now - sitting next to Keith from Inventables. Pics and commentary to follow!  posted by stucon, core77
