JUNKYARD WARS

tlc.discovery.com/tlcpages/junkyard/junkyard.html

First there was ROBOT WARS, where contestants spent thousands of dollars and man hours building robotic devices of destruction in an all out battle royal. This year we are again treated to similar heroics as The Learning Channel airs the British TV series SCRAPHEAP CHALLENGE. Dubbed JUNKYARD WARS, for American television, each hour-long episode pits two opposing teams in a 10 hour challenge to design and build(...or was it build and design) a contraption or device that will outperform their competitors in a given challenge. The challenges, which range from undersea salvage to human flight, are never enough for the contestants, whose skills are just as diverse. Armed with their wits, a huge junkyard, and some tooling the teams race against the clock in hopes of advancing to the next heat.

Although TLC has finished airing the 1999 season, they promise to return with another season of even more challenges for 2001. Check their website (tlc.discovery.com/tlcpages/junkyard/junkyard.html) for air dates of reruns and future episodes, and while you're there you can download an application to compete in a future episode. Let's see some good ol' global competition!
