hi
my school (james madison u, harrisonburg, va, usa) is renovating an old warehouse for use as a new studio space for the art department. the head of the industrial design department has given us the task of outfitting the space with tables, desks, shelving, storage, couches, etc. we all came to the concensus that the one thing worth spending a lot of the budget on was good chairs. we spend a lot of time sitting down, so it seemed to make sense that we'd concentrate on that one thing. we are looking for a good work chair, but something different than the typical "office space" type chair that you see in most places. anyway.. we're looking to purchase anywhere from 20-45 (depending on how we configure the space) chairs. if anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be excellent.

thanks a lot
peace

ps - it's not so much hip, stylish stuff we're looking for, so much as comfort.

Check out the Herman Miller Aeron chairs. They are the most adjustable, comfortable chairs around. I sit in one for a good part of the day and I love it. We checked into a lot of chairs before we purchased them. Plus they are pretty stylish.

Check out some of the auction houses. There's a lot of barely used high quality office chairs out there.
Lots of Aerons.

aeron chairs are great(i've got one myself)...but $25000+ in chairs for a school studio ? in my day $50 wooden bar stools were good enough.

your ass went dead after a couple of hours, but by then you were ready to head for the union for a coffee break anyway.

You guys got wooden bar stools. I am even jelous of that.

Our school didn't supply chairs. It was rummored that back in the day there was a large purchase made towards chairs, but the chairs were either quickly stoolen, dismantles or just distroyed throughout the course of their lifetimes.

Everyone has certain personal preferences for chairs. We would all go out and buy our own. It made us responsible for them so you try to take better care of your throne.

Well, if your serious about getting a large number of chairs. Contact Herman Miller, Keilhauer, and other manufacturers. When you start talking numbers up around 50, they really listen and sometimes give out some free sample chairs to help you make a decision.

HMI Aeron Chair: $700/chair sizes A, B, and C. Definately worth the money. We all sit on them in our office, and we design contract furniture for a living.

You can probably get a discount for being a non-profit institution and ordering a quanity...plus things are very slow in the furniture industry right now.

check out www.hermanmiller.com

stay away from the RED products for design workstations.

good luck.

They work for the cia...or they are just some sicko pervert who reads these posts with salami in hand, waiting to piss people off.

Anywho...$599 for an Aeron is pretty good. The Leap chair from Steelcase is also pretty nice, but the price tag is steep, like $1000 or so.

in high school i was employed at a machine shop as a helper/apprentice.

one of the first jobs i was assigned was to dress down the surface of a rusty drill press table. i proceeded to start scraping and sanding, as directed, and soon found that it was dirty, dreary, fatiguing work, and was obviously going to take most, if not all, of the day to complete.

i pulled up a stool and proceeded to lose myself in the task, scraping and filing away. moments later my efforts were interrupted when the shop foreman kicked my stool out from under me! "we aren't paying you to sit around! you can work much better standing".

and he was right. you have better control of your arms and your movement is less restricted while standing.

today of course he'd be sued for his actions, but in 1969 it made an impression on me that i've never forgotten.

yeah, the caper is nice and cheap- the aeron is nice, the humanscale freedom is better, and the leap sucks. You may think that having every factor adjustable is cool, but trust me. After having an aeron at home and sitting in a leap for two years at work, I know which is better. There's a lot of chairs out there though- if your buying 50, find a local dealer to give you a variety of chairs to test out. Oh, and my school had schelpo metal stools that not only numbed your ass but tipped over with the slightest incentive. your chairs will get stolen.

We used the same crappy, ass-numbing metal stools at my school. Started replacing them with these comfy things which basically resemble an office chair on an extra-high base, with a metal ring 'round the bottom to rest your feet on. Problem was, the armrests were plastic, and they'd often break. I imagine they were far cheaper than the Aerons others have suggested, which would be stolen immediately. How long are your classes? You're not going to be sitting in the chair for 8 hours straight, are you?

seriously, if you want cheap,easy,half-way comfortable and on a nice budget, just get a bunch of metal stools then go to wal-mart and buy seat cushons. Students in a smaller university dont need to be, and shouldnt be sitting in herman miller seats. Its old school anyways, it keeps you awake and really its not that bad.

---if its for a computer lab or something than thats a different story (still not herman miller, not that they're bad but that they are expensive, especially for a smaller Univ.) ,

i was talking more for studio chairs, at a drafting/drawing table.
