I am looking to purchase a laptop computer for 3D modeling and design. What specifics should I be looking for in operating systems? Which computer manufactures are highly recommended? Any advice would be helpful... Thanks

-don't get a mac -don't get a celeron or the AMD equivalent (get P4 etc) -lots of memory at least 512MB -get one with a good graphics card. one that is seperate (ie doesn't share memory or computation resources with mother board) I'd say 64MB minimum -get a seperate mouse (mousepad/pointer won't cut it) -Dell's inspiron 8600 is nice (and powerful). but any P4 with 512MB (min)RAM and at least 30GB harddrive (I like bigger). - the Dell Precision M60 Workstation is really nice if you can afford it, Voodoo and alienware also make nice powerful laptops. -"M " processor is good, trty to make sur the machine is not using a desktop chip. it'll run too hot and kill your batteries.ummm. bigger screen is good (15" min) uxga if possible. if you don't need a laptop you can get a Whole lot more for your buck with a desktop. (19"LCD monitor, dvd burner, much more memory and storage, faster processor, better upgrade paths, etc) good luck! try and take advantage of the boxing week specials

basically for 3d on a laptop , you have to aim at the top of the line specs. which means you are looking at the more expensive ones. I cannot stress enough the importance of the graphics card. the guy at the store may say "sure this puppy can handle it' but their lying.
