currently doing a lot of CAD work sitting in a crappy old office chair. looking to buy something like an Aeron. quality and comfort over long hours in front of the workstation is paramount. would like to keep cost under control. somewhere around a $1000 is okay.

suggest something please.

there was a link posted about the aeron chair a while back, saying how bad it was.

i can't find it just now, but off the top of my head the problems were - circulation getting cut to the legs because of an unpadded part at the front to the seat, mesh catching on clothes, arm rests in wrong place, and other stuff. but i suppose no chairs perfect.

good idea to get a nice chair. any time i need to sit at the computer for long i get pressure sores! it is a 60's polyprop afteral! its a pain in the ass.

Also check here: http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/coll.do?coll=RB174

Basic Aeron chair - $599
Classic Aeron chair - $799
Posturefit Aeron chair - $849

I have not purchased an Aeron chair but have bought many other furniture pieces from this company over the past 5 years. I have been very happy with the quality, service and prices.

i had an aeron, it was fine for short sittings but it sucked for long sessions. having a soft mesh letting your butt sink while a frame aroud it cuts the circulation of your legs really sucked. the arm rests had many ways to adjust but never did it for me.

I bough a leap from a used office furniture reseller and since then i'm a happy seater. I could not tell you what I like about it because the whole experience is invisible. I just sit there and it feels right. Not first impression of softness like the aeron (and like a fluffy cheap mattress) but in the long run it just works. I say if you have a chance to trya chair for a few days do so, is areasonable request to any serious merchant.

the problem I have with the Aeron chair is that it is only available in one color and finish.

For comparison I've tried the Aeron, Leap, and Freedom chairs and found the Leap by Steelcase to be the best in terms of ergonomics, range of options and finishes. It does list higher than Aeron, but if you talk to your Steelcase rep they'll probably cut you a deal--if nothing else to keep you away from Aeron.

also, if you come into a windfall opt for the Coach leather version or the Leap lounge and work ottoman.

Don't forget Ebay. They have always had Aeron chairs and I bet they have Leap chairs also.

I have an Aeron and love it. Love it even more when I got the PostureFit upgrade for some much needed sacral and lumbar support.

Does the Leap provide any sacral support?

suglis - the Aeron is actually available in at least 2 frame colors and many fabric colors - but I think you have to order from a Herman Miller dealer. You can also get leather armrests.

I notice the circulation problem when I sit in it incorrectly - too far forward or perched on the edge.

The ability to try out a chair for a bit is another benefit of going through a dealer.

2 Aeron--

have only ever seen it in grey frame and never ever seen the mesh back in anything other than black. This includes discussions about the Aeron with my HM rep when I ended up specing Leap on a project because they couldn't offer anything jazzier than Aeron black. Neither the HM website or my brochures suggest any alternatives either. So...what colors and are they custom?

Incidentally, HM has a new chair Mirra that may be a good (cheaper?) alternative to Aeron. Due out in June.

hey suglis - the other frame color is called Mica, it's a nice light gray color, maybe they don't make it anymore? Your HM dealer should have samples of the Pellicle fabric mentioned above.
