Hello-I am just getting started in the design world and would like to get a computer for home to start learning programs and working on my own art. Any suggestions on which is better PC or Mac? I hear many designers out there use Mac. Is that for hardware reasons or for software reasons(for example, you already bought a lot of Mac fonts and don't want to switch over). Thanks!

Oh dear.... yet another victim starts the ancient debate. From my perspective, PCs are better because: 1 - you can use software which Macs have (photoshop, illustrator, etc) 2 - you can use alot of 3D/graphics software which Macs don't have (ex: Alias Studio, Rhinoceros, ProE) 3 - PCs are much cheaper and have a wider range of hardware available IP: Logged |

That's kind of why I have been leaning towards PC, but I'm a little skeptical b/c the PCs I have used at other jobs seem to get bombarded by worms, viruses, etc. And the microsoft operating systems seem to crash often. But then again, maybe it's because I type to fast and push too many buttons. Who knows.IP: Logged |

I have been using/own PCs since 1997 and never had a virus (knock on wood.) • You need to be sure you have proper virus protection, firewall (if on DSL or Cable connection) and update them often. • Never open a file that you haven't scanned for viruses first. • Never open an e-mail from someone you don't know. Never open an attachment even from someone you know unless you are expecting it. (E-mail the person to check and see if in fact they did send you an attachment. This is called safe computing. Its just like safe sex. Not 100% but the alternative is not to have sex (or in the case of your computer not to share files or go on line.) IP: Logged |

I would think it would depend on the type of design you are getting into. You refer to the design world. Graphic Design? Web? Industrial? Environmental? 3D? Motion? Etc.... If you are going into Graphic Design I would suggest Mac all the way... the others I would go PC. What is your focus going to be? Figure your focus then look at the software that is that industry standard.IP: Logged |
