I am looking for a deffinition of post-modern, in terms of design, furniture- what exactly makes things POST modern, instead of modern? What characteristics in design/interior design are found in post modern stuff? Any insights would be very helpful, thankyou!

Modern: "Less is more." (Mies Van Der Rohe)

Post Modern: "Less is a bore." (Robert Venturi)
-------------------------------------------------
The Modernist rejected the 'decorative design' of the past. Post Modernist chose to borrow from the past rather than reject it. Post Modernism was a reaction to Modernist (minimalist) aesthetic.

That's just an brief introduction. You may want to look at these links:

http://www.designboom.com/portrait/mies.html

You may also want to take a look in you're library.

(I actually had a final project last semester which included a paper. I was supporting Marshall McLuhan's statement, "We march backwards into the future," by examining post modern design. That's why I happen to have a few links for you.

Check out the work that came out of Cranbrook in the period from the mid-seventies through the early nineties. You can see a lot of it in the Gallery on the alumni site:
http://www.cranbrookdesign.com

There's also a book that came out, called Cranbrook Design: The New Discourse.

Also, you may find writing by Katherine and Michael McCoy, who were chairs of the design department at Cranbrook, to be of interest. A lot of their essays are found on their site:

Strongly recommend "Beauty and the Contemporary Sublime" by Jeremy Gilbert-Rolfe.
Read this book during undergraduate course at SVA and very inspired.
You can see what's post-modern and how it changed or differ from the past notion of Modernism. It gives varios text on Fine Art, Decorative art, Fashion, Media and the Philosophy of Beauty. The book is thin, so it won't take you much time to read.
However personally I feel this Post-modernism is already a thing for the past if you are a person who understand what's going around in the world right now.
