I'm currently in the midst of applying for graduate school programs in design and I'm in a quandry. Ultimately, I really would like to attend IIT's Institute of Design. I've been to their open house and their program seems fantastic. However, I'm not one to put all my eggs in one basket. So, where else to apply? I've been thinking about Carnegie Mellon's Human Centered Design program, Arizona State University, and I read a blurb (and visited the website) of the Design Academy in Eindhoven (http://www.designacademy.nl/). However, reading a website and a course catalog is a less than representative method of determining which schools are best. I just got back from a trip to Calgary as I was quite excited about the prospect of the University of Calgary's Environmental Design program. I visited with students, attended classes, and was ultimately disappointed and will now not even apply there. So....I suppose I'm looking for a bit of advice from all of you. More than willing to offer up more information on myself if requested. Thanks in advance for any and all contributions.

CMU HCI program is tough - check out their design program. Why IIT? CMU design is better . . .

Get ready to drop a load of money regardless of what you do . . .

I went to IIT. It could be the best (and only) choice depending upon what you want to be doing in the long run.

If you're interested in product strategy (positioning, marketing, systems) then I would encourage you to look further, if product development is your fancy (form, manufacutring, materials) then you shouldn't waste your time.

CMU and Stanford's programs are in a similar vein to IIT's.

Koalb, what do u mean by "If you're interested in product strategy (positioning, marketing, systems) then I would encourage you to look further."?

Is IIT a good place to learn product strategy? I really want to get some knowledge. I want to be a strategist.

I am curious why you would write off the Univ. of Calgary. I am a grad from their Masters in Industrial Design program and, by and large, had a good experience.

U of C is different. It attracts a different type of person looking for a different type of thing. I suspect you went their to learn how to be a designer, at IIT and CMU (not Stanford) you learn how to think more. . .
