I'm working on a piece for the CES show - we're modding a current display that uses an LCD backlit by an array of tiny amber LEDS to give amber on black text.
The client wants blue on black text - anyone have any ideas on creating a nice UNIFORM blue backlight - our hastily constructed matrix of blue LEDs is really not very uniform, even with a diffuser plate, due to the focused nature of the blue LEDs.

have you tried EL sheets?

We placed it behind a frosted peice of acrylic and it had a great uniform glow that was bright enough to be seen in the daytime

thanks for the input.
We actually did consider electroluminescent but discounted it because it was felt that the light is a little dim and kind of "milky" - not the crisp, bright blue that you need for an LCD display. We may still pursue it though after lookingat the link.
I'd love to know what the story is behind the glowing robot with the axe.

This may be irrelevant now, but you can vary the luminosity of the EL lamp by increasing the frequency at the inverter. That is to say, a 12v inverter at 600Hz will have less lumiance than at 4000Hz. I believe the output is relatively proportional.
