studied ID, took a "new economy" job in interaction design/information architecture
------------------------
fourteen months ago:
3 years out of school
100k per year + 15% bonus + thousands of stock options + great benefits
i was generously overpaid, but the job and the sucked...

today:
company not profitable = no bonuses
company not profitable = worthless options
company not profitable = laid off
company screwed = much glee
self employed = poor but happy

180K per year with 6 months experience. Company cars include Plymouth Prowler during the summer and a new Hummer during the Winter. I have two secretaries, one to do my work and the other to rub my back. I design paper clips and rubber bands. Full benefits for everyone in my family including aunts, uncles and even great grandparents.

Life is so good. Aren't you jealous?

ID with MA
$46,700+bonuses (usually about $52K) w/ full benefits and stock options (low for the area, norm for me should be $55).
Have an offer on the table for a Sr position, should be about $75K (or more), benefits, stock, control of product line : )

It's Here! Coroflot brings you our first official design salary survey, with information provided by our intredpid users. Time to find out if your boss is paying you what you're worth! Or, for the hiring managers out there, here's a guideline for figuring out what to pay your employees. It only takes a minute!

check out http://www.coroflot.com/salary_survey/ for more details. Thanks for participating.

At least on this string we can see the info posted and judge which posts were obviously false. The new income survey does not have anyway for us to trust or distrust the posts, and there is no real info given for us to compare jobs, and the type of work being preformed. There have been some good genuine replys HERE (even if mared by the odd kid being stupid, but those posts are easy to spot).

I would like to see people to continue to contribute honestly to both these posts, but in particular this string.

Australian ID degree. 1 year ID experience. Sole ID guy in a small design and engineering startup in Singapore. Concepts 30%, alias 50%, pro/e 20%. S$43000 sing dollars a year, USD$25000/year equiv. 5% tax ain't bad but this is a small, small place. Like all the other aussie posts I have read, I agree, the pay and industry in Australia is small. Singapore is not great either but their is alot of manufacturing here. Guess I am using this as a springboard to the next thing. Probably head to the US next. Any hints any one?

I am an industrial designer with 6 years of experience. I have been a consultant since graduation. I have 4 years of project management and now manage the design team at a twenty person design firm. I made:
26K in '95
28K in '96
32K in '97
36K in '98
38K in '99
54K in '00 (design manager)

54K for a project manager in the Boston area isn't bad, but for a manager of ID it's light. I am trying for more, believe me!!!

How many people are your responsible for--do they report to you. Trying to get a feel for your responsibilities and duties. Proposal writing, quotes, profit & loss responsibility, new business development. Do you report to the owner directly or to a VP of Design.
Sounds light to me--I would think a Design Manager would be 80K. Especially in Boston.

Good luck.

I just graduated from an industrial design program in the Midwest and accepted an offer from a large corporation. Here's what I was offered and some info about internships.

*Full-time offers*
35K-New England design firm(not in NYC)
35K-Large International Corporation doing consumer products
42K-Large manufacturer in the Midwest
-all offered very competitive benefits

*Past Internships*
Intern at 40 person product dev. firm
$10/hr
Intern at large corporation in the Twin Cities
$15/hr

My advice to those fresh out of school-DON'T BE AFRAID TO NEGOTIATE! I wish I would have more.

Reviewing this thread, I think I make next to nothing. I guess its not bad considering the area.

4 years exp
little itty bitty town with low living cost
38K /year
health, life, dental, eye insurance
Health club membership
401K with matching
2 weeks Vacation
some travel, many travel benefits like personal week vacation in Europe before business without use of vacation time (pretty nice I thought) etc..
