Laid off since I last posted on this thread, found work again after a couple of months of looking. Salary went down from $45K to $41K, so about a 10% paycut, but better benefits, more exciting work and better opportunities for advancement. Not so bad, I can hardly see the difference on my paycheck.IP: Logged |

Fresh college i.d. grads are lucky if they can start at 40K, let alone find work in this crazy field. Heck, those of you who are working should consider yourselves lucky to have a job. National unemployment may be at 5-7%, but I'm sure it's much much higher in i.d.IP: Logged |

These replies are real financial downers. And to think I want to get into Industrial Design. Well, it won't be the pay that will get me into the field. A pure love for design will just have to do....I guess?A wise man once told me "...if a job was fun, who would pay you a lot to do it?" This is certainly true about ID. Just think what products would look like if they were only left up to engineers, marketing, and executives to design. For God's sake you guys/gals make the products sellable!! Topic:This is how much money we make in ID. Not a whole heck of a lot!!!

quit whining and start working. I'm at it just over eight years and making more than last guy (don't mean that as an insult IDguynyc and this is not directed at you, just the previous whiners..) if you would quit looking for praise and glory, and be humble, money is whatever you want it to be. the trick is to move a lot while you are young, and start in corporate, then go to consulting. out of school, don't stay at your first job for more than two years, even if you love it. move a lot while you are young, and make each of your first three corporate jobs different types of products for different experiences. It pays off later when you consult or freelance. I'm starting my 6th full time job as I speak, but also do freelance on the side, with the blessing of my employer as long as it's not conflict of interest. I'm working a lot, but also making a lot. the two go hand in hand. get out there and explore other options besides your day job. You'd be surprised what people will pay for creativity, as we take it for granted, others don't have it, and will pay for it. I love America!IP: Logged |

Good for you! However, I think you misunderstood where I was going with what I said previously. Unlike you, most people become wiser with age. I made some mistakes in my early years but these were my choices and I am to blame for them, but nevertheless, its never too late to change the path you are on. No matter what a job pays, if you really love it, then you are many times richer than people who make a lot more but hate their jobs. A dream job jolts you out of bed every morning!IP: Logged |

Come on guys the types of responds I've seen here are pure encouragment to cheap employers to pay even less. I just want to say that you don't have to take what most of employers will offer if you are a good designer. I turned down quite a few offers because the money was just ridiculous, and the old story of "we are not here for the money, ID is for self realization, the experience, blah, blah..." is getting old, give me a break! I'm almost 3 years out of school, pulling $85-90K a year, truth I did make about half that right out of school, but I got smart and I know my employer charges $150 for my billable hour now (I'm 100 % billable, because I work fast so my employer can bill even to make up for the time I'm chatting or learning something between projects) and I never go overbudget! That gives him 300K of billable work (we also are lucky that stayed busy even with the slow down) So making what I make is still a sweet deal for them, I got offers of 50-60K before, they where not bad for my experience, but I knew I could get better because I'm worth it, many colleagues in this industry don't think this way and all they think is that I'm greddy. I guess they've been brained washed big time, by cheap employers! Of couse there is also people who can't charge that much for design services, but again if you are good, why in the hell would you work for them? IP: Logged |

boy you are good if you are pulling 85-90 and only have 3 years of experience.I'd say most designer go flat at that point unless they get into management/sales. Good for you. You were smart to ask for 5 or 10 K more, which a firm might budge if they want you. They are not going to lose someone over $5K. At $15K they have to start thinking, twice. Also to make that in a consultancy to boot! I assume it is a tier one design consultancy. IP: Logged |

hey, one more thing to add - male or female?? I am....a girl in NYC 66K 10% bonus per year for "good performance" lousy insurance 401K RISD, out 6 years 1 of 12 designers for home products design manager, direct projects but hire freelancers to develope ideas, 2 assistants long hours but still learn everyday so worth it quote: Originally posted by Income: Everyone always asks this, so lets make it one big post, instead of little ones all over, and get it over with. If you have a job, write in and tell us what you make, or what your co-worker makes, or what the principles of the firm make, or whatever (if you know). Please no names (that includes the made up ones people are identified with here) Keep it anonomous but honest(we do not care who you are or what company you work for, we are interested in what the incomes for the industry really are). Try to add a general area of design you work in, type of company, a general location, and your years of experience. US (east, mid-west, west)? Europe (country)? Asia (country, city)? Canada (don't bother, just kidding, west prairie, or east)? Southern Hemisphere (we want to here from you too)? Working on your own? Working for a design firm? Working for a manufacturer? Working as a desk designer? working as a senior designer? Working as a design manager? Again please no names, that includes the made up ones people go by on this site. We do not wish this to be a joke posting, or mis-information, only honest replies. This info is valuable to all of us in the industry, and there are few acurate resourses for us. This is not to pose further questions, please just post a reply only.
I suggest this format for replies:
UserName: a.) Funiture designer, for a manufacturer, in mid-west, USA, have 5 years experience - $43,000 (US) no stock options.

hello anyone working in NYC...how much does a designer need to make to at least be above the poverty level in NYC? 50K? 60K? It seems out here around the Bay Area, especially in SF, if you are pulling under 45K it's a squeeze, factoring in rent and maybe a car or school loan payment. IP: Logged |

Stock options - Sorry I can't give you all the details, yet and a lot of it depends on the price that the company is sold at. There is so much fuzzy math involved that I could make $5K or I could make $350K. It's all gambling, but I am currently being paid well and the environment is very nice, so why not. My plan is to use the money to start my own business, which would be a conduit between designers (initially in the USA) and manufacturers (initially in the Orient). I seem to be good at sniffing out good manufacturers.IP: Logged |
