How is the Residential Interior Design job market in Houston at the present time? Is there anyone doing Contemporary Design, or is it mostly Traditional?

RDGadz,No, I have never considered doing interior design in Michigan. Yes, I prefer doing contemporary design. Truth be told, I am a frustrated Residential Interior Designer working in Houston. The firm I am currently with, primarily does Traditional interiors. All Contemporary interior projects are turned over to me. The projects are; however, to few. This is due the firm's established reputation. I am looking to work for a firm in Houston that primarily does contemporary design. I have been concerned if any exist. I thank you for your time, and the information you provided. IP: Logged |

i am working on an online interior design site, so interior designers all over the country will be able to communicate and find work. i think it will most likely be heavily contemporary because of the kind of high tech kitchens i want to create. i have big plans for this new form of design company that uses the web as a corporate headcourters instead of a small showroom. still i have much to learn as far as businesses is conducted online as well as using databases such. currently i am working on a kitchen design book for kitchens evolving into the 21st century. in it will be my studies on family life and how the kitchen is turning into the traditional living room. i will also incorporate computers, technology, and human factors for kitchens of the future. RDGadz,Your online interior design site, and anticipated kitchen design book intrigue me. I look forward to both. Contemporary Kitchen Design is exactly what I want to specialize in. I am not completely sold on Houston for this niche. We have had a surge in Loft living over the past 5 years. This may be the avenue to tap into, but I don't want to starve. Like anything ventured, it must be researched first. Your thoughts? IP: Logged |

Yes, to an extent. Too much research can get in the way of real work to make things better. quote: Oh cool-- another one of your message boards? AWESOME!
This one won't just be a message board, its more like an online operating system for interior designers. Example: lets say someone needs to remodel their kitchen... when they visit this new interior design site they will have access to designers who will speak to them in a private forum type setting. The designer might come to take measurement and then relay designs back to the client through the website, where the client can give them feedback. As things progress through the design process the client will be able to make decisions on flooring, cabinets, sinks, etc. through the same website. The kitchen that their designer is creating will be in a database so the client, designer, or contractor won't have to figure out how much material is needed. it will be derived from the 3d design that the designer creates. Lets say the client chooses a hardwood floor after discussing it with the designer. The client will be able to add up all the costs of the materials that they choose on the website. The website will then place a direct order for hardwood floor and as soon as it comes in the warehouse, the carpenter will deliver and install the floor if the database says the kitchen is ready. All this without a single phone call or extra driving trips for anyone. IP: Logged |
