Could somebody give me advice on what companies are doing research in wearable electronics at the moment.
I'm looking for a graduation project to finish my masters Industrial Design at the Technical University in Delft, the Netherlands.

best regards,
Geert van den Boogaard

Philips, Sony, IDEO & IBM did studies on wearable electronics years ago... i doubt that you can do anything relevant in this area anymore...

- as most publications are from 1999 and 2002, why do you think there's nothing relevant left in this area? There hasn't been a succesful product in the market. Do you think it doesn't have any potential?

It doesn't have potential at the moment because most of the technologies that are needed have to be invented: like foldable screens etc... So your project will end like the others: a concept or vision.
This road has been so often explored, by both students and companies. It's doubtful you will make an impact and get a job based on this kind of project...

Get real man...foldable screens are right around the corner...its box tight minds liek youurs that doesnt let design for the future progress....I'll admit there are restrictions to think about if the technologies are say, 7+ years away..but foldable screens....sorry..i've seen them, touched them, played around with them.... the question now is how to apply them...they are cool...but manufacturing stucture, etc, $$$ have to drop....

ANyhow,, to Geert Van Den...... Your in the Netherlands...go to Phillips and ask them questions....from my knowledge they probably have the best resources for this type of stuf.

cheers

The thing I notice is that most publications are mostly technology based instead of fashion based. Isn't the problem with wearable electronics that it's difficult to get a good cooperation between fashion and technology? Have there been publications out of the fashion world?

Geert, do your homework better... Philips did their wearable electronics project in colloboration with fashion Designers and Levis! So it's not a problem to get a good cooperation between fashion and technology.
The problem is that ignorant and un-informed designstudents keep thinking that they have invented the wheel... Yes students can have fresh ideas that challenge industries, but obviously you haven't reached that level yet. See you at the McDonalds in Delft when you're serving m Big macs!

I know what Philips did. Indeed there are quite a few companies working in this field. Some of them (e.g. Philips) did a lot of research, but lowered their efforts at the moment. The thing I notice is that most products, except a few (e.g. Philips - Feel good) are mostly a combination of two products (jacket - mp3 player,Philips - Levi's project). With a new technology it should be possible to come to a real new approach instead of a redesign of existing products. What's your view on this topic (please don't refer to McDonalds anymore)?
