Can anyone give me an idea what the industrial design climate is like in Seattle and Portland? (yes, big area) I am looking at a job/career change in the area and wanted to know about other potential opportunities... (no, I am not interested in the Nike CD position)its a long story, but I am looking to move from my SE location to the NW, and I wanted to know what's good/bad, etc. I am well aware of the financial impact... that shouldnt be a problem. Whats the better place to live? (I have elementary school age children). and why... any insight would be appreciated...

It does not inspire me... Call it personality or whatever.... I have spent the last few years leading 50+ designers in 8 regional offices. I am not all that interested in taking on that type of responsibility for Nike. I also think that they are looking for someone specific and I am not it. Id rather not divulge too much in this forum, thanks for the thought just the same... are you familiar with the area? (are you from Nike?) IP: Logged |

I am from the Seattle area. The cost of living difference is mainly caused by the cost of buying a house. Larger corporations do have relocation packages to offset the sticker shock. The state of Washington does not have a state income tax. So that is a good plus. The city of Bellevue has 3 highschools that made it to the 10 best list in the nation. There are many great school districts outside of Bellevue. I saw a few postings by Microsoft recently. I have a few friends working there. They seem to have a great benefit package though probably not everyone would be happy working there. IP: Logged |

Thanks Bellevue! I am looking at a pretty good relo-pkg... and have room for negotiation. No state income tax is really a good thing! The Bellevue area came up in my searches already, so its great to hear it from you. I would probably set up my office in Redmond not too far from MS... Can you suggest some neighborhoods (if there are any)to look at?

Yeah, Bellevue has a pretty good school district, but it's a cookie-cutter suburban sprawl with no sense of community (every street corner looks the same, and so do the strip malls).IP: Logged |

Hey Ballard, I do think Ballard is nice but you have probably seen a very small (wrong) part of Bellevue. Compared to Sammamish or real suburban sprawl of any cities in the US, Bellevue has a very different neighborhood that is so far from cookie cutter. Some by the lake, up on the hill or a few blocks away from a city center. You can still have a half acre property with mountain views a few minutes from everywhere...IP: Logged |

The design scene in Seattle has been picking up, but setting up a consultancy/shop here would not be recommended. There are very few corporations aside from Microsoft that offer substantial work. In order to survive, you'd have to look at companies up and down the coast. Several consultancies have closed there doors with Teague being the exceptional bright spot. The last I heard they are hiring. Depending on your taste, Microsoft is also a good place to work. The benefit packages are not as extravagant as they have been, but more enterprising designers do well there. IDEO also has a small office on the Microsoft campus doing mainly Interaction Design. Cheers, Dave IP: Logged |

Interaction Design? is that what people have to resort to when they can't find jobs in traditional ID? The Pacific NW sounds pretty grim then.
