I started the day after graduation. It really helps to have a good internship senior year. Contacts in my city were developed sophmore, jr & sr year through IDSA and other industry events (lectures, parties, conferences etc.) My school was also good at getting local ID leaders in for guest lectures or us into their firms for tours etc. IP: Logged |

Well, I had my first job about a month before graduation, so... In my case, the VP had seen my work at a school show.If I were in your position, and the portfolio was high-quality (no revisions necessary), I'd concentrate on presentation. Too often newly-minted designers forget that their design skills should extend beyond just the portfolio. I'd put together an amazing website and get crits from anyone and everyone (and have a thick enough skin to accept even the nastiest comments with graciousness). In addition, I'd prepare a hand-made samples mailer. "HOW" magazine used to have a yearly "Self-Promotion" issue (still do?) which was full of excellent and inspirational examples. Once you've targeted some potential employers (20 or 30), send them that custom-made sampler. Not just some plastic, bought-at-the-art-store crap stuck inside a manilla envelope. Design it. The samples, the package, everything. Make something that upon delivery, makes the entire studio stop working to look at it. That should be your goal. After that, give them a call (if they don't call first). If they're not hiring, and they're impressed with both the work and how you presented it, you can at least have some expectation of a referral. IP: Logged |

You can start by not saying "uni" That sounds gay to Americans. We go to college. Or for the 87% of the rest of the US, high school.IP: Logged |

Graduated during a downturn, took the summer to get my bag together, did a little 3 month Europe tour... landed first in ~3 months. Persistance worked best - send a letter followed by a 'I'm going to be in your area...' phone call, jamed foot in door, talked with everyone who would listenIP: Logged |

Got my first gig 9 months out, after sending out over 40 mailers and 5 interviews, all lost to people with 5+ years of experiance that were willing to take the pay cut back to entry level just to have a pay check again. I was persistant and called my contacts on a monthly basis to chech base with them, finally was given a trial (pet) project by one of the partners in a small consultancy. That product went over so well I was hired full time, and one year later I and the lead designer, with two big name clients who have my company and me in particular on retainer revamping their entire product line.Persistance my friend, and use this down time to perfect your sketching and ideation quality and speed it is key to landing the job. You will beable to prove your problem solving better once working for them. IP: Logged |
