Is there any work a well trained sculpture major with a basic knowledge of design can do in the design industry?

What sort of '"basic knowledge of design" do you have, and what area(s) of design are you considering?

Have you considered the toy industry, Gift industry (who do you think makes those little statues like precious moments...also includes home decor) Display houses, Movie industry, (props etc?)

Open your eyes there's opportunities out there.

if you are a good modelmaker i would highly suggest some clay modeling with either faber of chavant clay, if you are any good i would start looking at the automotive industry, as you need little design knowledge going in as a modeller.
best of luck

You can become a professional clay modeller for car companies. Ask around, maybe cardesignnews.com will help.
