I'll be graduating this spring and am interested to get a good perspective on ID employment status as a whole [i.e. minus showing my portfolio and getting criticism (constructive or not) to illustrate my personal employment opportunity, or getting pep talks on how to land a job]. Ok so that being said, Is it still hard to find a job, even if you’re pretty talented. Let me break this down the way I see it and maybe you can all defrag or support some of my observations. Obviously many of the 12,000+ portfolios on Coroflot are old, neglected, suck, etc. or the person found a job. But even if those excuses ate up 3/4ths of the portfolios that's still roughly 3,000 portfolios to the 175 jobs listed. Or a ratio of 17 to 1. That doesn't seem to promising. Ok but wait, not all design jobs get posted on core and are only listed by word of mouth or some other media. Cut that in half and that’s still 9 to 1. Is that a good observation or am I off? If so, in what regards? Seeing people update their portfolios every day on Coroflot (some who have some real talent) and hearing about people getting no responses (not even rejection letters) doesn't seem to encouraging to me that job ops in design are that great and are in fact rather poor. Please post some intelligent thoughts or recent experiences concerning this topic. Thanks and Happy New Year.

We need good team players that do as they are told. By an uneducated Biatch that will be your supervisor, because her daddy works for the company. Please dont talk about process or creativitry, because you are nothing. I am everything, because my daddy works here. Just remember we need you to be a good team player while you recieve no benefits of being on the team. Do as I say and dont question??? or add input! Because I am your BOSS & you are nothing because your daddy doesnt work here. Being a freelancer does not have anything to do with getting a job here. But most of our employees are result of freelancing for us first. But disregard that. Yes we may hire a woman when she is over 50 years old after ten plus years of freelancing. But we are great. My daddy is great and you are nothing more than I say you are. Fisher Price, Creative Services Department. East Aurora, NY Sincerely, L.D. we need good team players! we need good team players! we need good team players! We love abusing graphic designers in the economic wasteland of Upstate, NY Does your dady work here? IP: Logged |

Wise~The key to anything in life is determination and persistence. The fact that I got a job when the eco sucked is truth enough. Don't look at statistics, because that only keeps you down. Try to meet people, shake lots of hands, and don't believe people when they try and tell you that you suck.... Unless you actually do, then you can.=) IP: Logged |

d-ligent makes very valid points. I would just also like to make you aware of the many opportunities. I assume you are an IDer since you are posting on the core primarily IDers. However even if your a GDer the same holds true. If you have been to a good school or at least learned the skills you need on your own then you have a powerful design arsinal. I find a lot of designers try to be too specific in a job catagorie. Being narrow is great if you actually can find 100 companies posting jobs in your location for a furniture designer, car designer, ect. Your skills can easily be transfered to any area of design with a lot of practice. I suggest applying to anything design related. Of coarse you still need to hone your skills in your specialization if thats your dream, but if you get a job designing mailers, webpages, toys, animating, modeling, anything its vauluable experience. Also look to the military who is always looking for good designers, or possibly hollywood, maybe you will find you are an excellent digital matt painter. Also if you live in the economic wastland of upstate ny or whereever move don't be afraid to explore the whole world if a job in design is what you want. The economy is like the weather it might suck over there but it is ok over here ect. Good luck and happy new year! IP: Logged |

I doubt many people get jobs from core's postings.Although having a core pfolio is a must. You have to be creative now days. Go to smaller companies who might not have a design team, show them some flashy stuff they are not used to seeing and who knows, you might be head of a new department. Don't just apply either, you gota have tricks to get your feet in the door. Say you were refered to the company by someone, this will immediately get your name to the person who matters, it doesn't matter if they know the person or not if you get the interview. If a receptionist says you were referred to the company by "john blow" then they will likely interview you as a courtesy even if they are not hiring. Then you can pull out all stops and show them why they are losing if they do not hire you. People are so busy they don't know if they actually talked to the person or if the person exists or whatever if they ask just say they are a big designer in the area who recognized the quality work for their company and you have been working with that designer to better your portfolio or some BS. You have to have talent and a lot of it the trend is to get more for less so even the seasoned designers recieving jobs in this economy are not getting what they would wish sometimes. If your work is lacking I would never stear you from your dream of design but focus and realize area's you need to improve on and practice. Wise~ you sound like you are a determined individual who can do a lot in the design world. Focus your energies on your portfolio, presentation, and job searching stratagies not the economy. A lot of people recieve freelance jobs from core but i honestly don't think many get staff jobs from coroflot, so don't be afraid to show your work on here and get feedback, but be prepared for the negative losers who's portfolios are so lacking they have no more hope than to diss other folios on core. as keeptrying said goodluck and happy newyear

WHo in the military hires designers. I've asked around (i am military) and the ones I know aren't aware of it. Maybe I am asking the wrong ppl. Can you enlighten me on where to look for design opportunities in the Military and hollywood is hiring? IP: Logged |

I know several companies in Va Beach that work with military contracts that use design, also sikorski uses designers to work for the military and VRSim at VRSIM.net works on projects for the military too and they are hiring designers. As i am sure you are aware the military subs all their work so working with them directly might be more difficult without owning your own design firm to win contracts. And as far as hollywood I checked the other day and pixar had jobs listed for designers, I don't think you can get more hollywood than that. But their are a lot of other small unknown companies looking for good designers too you just got to look around. Comic books are even incorperating 3D into their art so if you are good at Cad that too might be an option. www.renderosity.com also has a lot of options for GDers to help with tutorials ect and they have jobs posted all the time. That community is more supportive than Core's and friendlier. I know times are hard now and it seems frustrating listening to someone post about opportunities in some posting on core, but I have found some of this information useful and I hope it is helpful to someone else! Good luck everyone and KEEP TRYING IP: Logged | |
