Goldsmiths University of London
MA in Design Futures

This MA degree challenges the conventional specialist roles of the
designer and helps you to bridge the gap between your creative
studio practices and the world of ideas, theories, and regulations. It
also encourages you to reflect on significant issues concerning the
general practices of design, and to develop informed scenarios
featuring design in the future.

Duration of Programme

One year full-time
Two years part-time

Application and Selection

We are eager to recruit applicants from a variety of design
backgrounds. You should have a degree in a design-related subject
and have acquired some experience in a relevant mode of
professional practice. Your application should either be accompanied
by twelve slides of practical work, or by selected written papers that
are relevant to some aspect of design. In each case you are also
asked to include in your application a brief essay, of no more than
one thousand words, on "Design Futures".

Curriculum

You attend six interconnected courses that facilitate an investigation
of contemporary design issues and are encouraged to reflect upon
your independent, design related practices within terms defined by
the seminar topics. Although the courses represent importantly
different perspectives, i.e. philosophical, anthropological, managerial,
technological, etc., they tend to overlap throughout the programme as
they begin to illuminate common practices, and to promote
speculation about the future of design itself.

Where practicable, your own design work will be used as a basis for
critical and imaginative speculation, and as a research focus for your
dissertation work. Throughout the programme you will be
encouraged to develop a body of documentation that demonstrates a
creative, realistic, and informed reappraisal of your professional
aims.

COURSE OVERVIEW (PART-TIME MODE)

YEAR ONE	-	four mandatory courses:

COURSE

*	Cognition and Communication
*	Society and the Individual
*	Technology, Culture, and Change
*	Design and the Environment

YEAR TWO	-	two optional courses from the following:

COURSE	ASSESSED OUTCOME

*	Ethics and the Enterprise Culture
*	Design Methodologies
*	Technology in Education

practical project work may be submitted with written submissions,
however this will not be assessed directly. Instead, emphasis will be
placed on the relational relevance between any practical work cited
and the writing itself.
