I bought these three little garden gnomes to sit on a shelf. Some nice housewife somewhere in the before me time went to the store to get them after surveying her yard to find that it was completely devoid of any natural charisma. Let’s see, when would that place it? She bought them, thinking of the quiet lovely that would be represented by their guard over her home. They all play musical instruments, stopped at a single moment in a song of my choice. It only takes a song to place you where you were - are - or shall be. Is it Supertramp’s “Logical Song”? Or perhaps it is George Benson’s version of Nat King Cole’s “Nature Boy.” All three hold plump breaths poised between heart beats for the rest of their being as three little gnomes. The tuba player has heavily lidded brown eyes…. deep like the sure to come next note. The guitar player’s mouth is stuck open like a conjugal dream. Flowers at their feet, beers in mugs, together they stay, drunken and joyful – and ever so still. This is my summer. I am stopped in the middle of inhaling the next Bossa Nova note to a slow and comfortable hot day.
