Design students, look away. There is no application here.
At first I thought it was motorized, but now I think it's free-spinning, and he's just moving it with his feet and momentum.
What I really want to see, is him trying to walk down it.
No word on who designed/built this, or why, but plenty of discussion on it here.
Could be useful in stage design for a play or musical; otherwise, yikes!
You just know some kid is going to sit halfway up and dare his friend to spin him around... 🤷
From a design study point of view, I appreciate the questioning of convention here... but... the practical side of my brain is asking "If he is using the momentum of the stairs to move in that way, what happens when he reaches the top and then has to stop an entire staircase from rotating to be able to step off?"
if you put it in a tube and place it in a small reflecting pool. then you could have a nice waterfall.
It could be functional if the hole in the second level of floor has a large enough diameter to include the footprint of the stair.
