Auto Designer Gerry McGovern on Modernism, Evolution and What Design Students Should be Learning
Good article Rain. You managed to bring out a more rounded, interesting version of Gerry McGovern. I've long been an admirer of his work, but not always of the way he presents. This article has managed to alter my perception of him.
Yes, nice interview, Rain.
I loved this bit from Gerry:
"We know through experience, or intuitively, what's "right" and what's "wrong," and you never create great products through committee. You never create great products by overzealousness on the part of looking at data. You just end up with normality in most occasions. It's what you actually bring in terms of the creative perspective that will bring customers to you."
That really strikes a chord relative to the quite common discussions with clients about their data, when they want "great" but struggle to resist the pull towards "normal".
Land Rover needs to get back to its rugged utilitarian roots. I can't wait for this grandpa-pants-high-waist-line trend to be behind us.
