A startup called Rendyr has developed the Optic, a clever design for a portable, space-saving 15W laser cutter with integrated filtration:
Although the footprint is relatively small, it actually has a comparable work area (12" x 18"), with its cutting mat in place, to the much larger Glowforge (11" x 19.5"):
Additionally, the cutting mat can be detached. Placed atop a larger workpiece, the Optic now has infinite cutting area (though I'm not sure how they're indexing it):

The Optic Portable Laser Cutter has been a massive success on Kickstarter. At press time it had landed $564,637 in funding on a $50,000 goal, with 20 days left to pledge. Buy-in starts at $1,995 and the machines are expected to ship by October of this year.
