How Coke's Refillable Bottle Initiative Works
This used to be the standard in most of Mexico pre 2000's. I visited Mexico in 2008 and the refill concept was gone by then. It was striking how much plastic garbage from single-use bottles there was in the streets. Coca-Cola introduced the concept of single-use plastic for soft drinks because it cut their costs drastically: shipping costs dropped with lighter plastic, they removed half of their supply chain after they no longer needed to recover bottles for clean up and re-use, and the packaging cost per bottle dropped as well. They were also able to expand their market, capturing on-the-go consumers, spaces where glass was not safe (no glass in beaches), etc.
I'd like to know the environmental impact of collecting, sorting, cleaning and washing the old bottles.
And it only took 4 years of being the worst offender...
