There! In the underbrush dead ahead! A gorgeous B/3-B/12-B/14 in its natural habitat.
The DMZ between urban and suburban America, where empty lots give way to supermarket parking spaces, teems with a singular kind of beast: the abandoned shopping cart. Artist Julian Montague is their Audubon, photographing, cataloging, and organizing the specimens with a hilarious and brilliant system. If you're playing along at home, the cart above is an Archaic, Vandalized True Stray Fragment.
You can see his project in "Sign / Age: Lost in the Supermarket" at Armand Bartos Fine Art on 73rd St. along with work by the Jacques Cousteaus and Edmund Hillarys of suburban exploration's golden age: William Eggleston, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and others. More carts after the jump.
