This Rappelkiste was designed in 1975 by the prolific German industrial designer Luigi Colani. Created for furniture manufacturer Elbro, it's a combination bed/desk/clothes storage unit for children.
The dowels used for the climbing bars, furniture supports and the doorknob are held in place by wedged tenons (also called tusk tenons).
Though the corners of the form are rounded, the predominantly rectilinear piece is a departure from Colani's organic, curvy aesthetic. I was able to learn little about the gestation or inspiration for this piece, but did learn that it was designed two years after Colani paid his first study visit to Japan. It makes sense, then, that he'd have been thinking of ways to compress multiple functions into limited space.

I was lucky to have a few classes with Colani as a visiting Professor, a few years before he passed. He was such a character, signed everything he created, and I mean everything. I still have the notes I took from his lecture.
Looks a lot like the Casa Kids furniture out of Brooklyn. https://casakids.com/
Make a version for a twin or full size mattress and I would buy one now!
Really nice. Someone should put this back into production!
I'm betting he designed the chair that little boy is sitting on. That's no departure from his style!
Indeed he did
