Remember those big Harry Potter picture frames? You know, the spooky, life-sized portraits that loomed above a staircase or hallway and showed just enough movement to make you think they are alive? Well, imagine those, only with glamorous celebrities decked out in full costume amidst dramatic lighting, and you will get the sense of what it was like to be in front of one of the VOOM Portraits from Robert Wilson's recent show at the Fabric Workshop Museum in Philadelphia. The subjects ran the gamut from Brad Pitt in full Fight Club regalia (boxer shorts and and aggressive mug) and Allan Cumming (in elaborate drag and slowly chewing on Oreo cookies) to various athletes, royalty and even the occasional member of the animal kingdom.Though Wilson is not the first artist to present portraiture this way (Bill Viola, for example, has been experimenting with the genre for some time now), his theatrical sensibility and lavish art direction make this series of full color, HD experiences something truly spectacular to behold.
Unfortunately, the US portion of the tour has come to an end, but you can still catch this show, sponsored by VOOM HD Networks, at the following European venues:
April 2 - May 31 Pasion & Francesas & San Benito Valladolid, Spain
June 19 - September 6 Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum Graz, Austria
June 15 - October 4 Palazzo Reale Milan, Italy
