When you think of a hot tub, you probably picture fiberglass or acrylic. But California-based Roberts Hot Tubs, which has been around since 1976, produces them exclusively in wood.
More ofuro (a traditional Japanese soaking tub) than jet-laden jacuzzi, Roberts' tubs are made from Teak, Western Red Cedar or Alaskan Yellow Cedar; properly cared for, these can actually outlast fiberglass and acrylic tubs, which UV exposure can cause to break down and delaminate over time.
The tubs are available in heights of three to five feet, with or without rim decks.
If climbing into one seems too precarious for the specific user, a common design trick is to sink the tub, site it in a hillside or deck up to it.
The company also makes rolling wooden slat covers for their tubs. The wood is bonded to a marine-grade vinyl scrim on the underside.
The tubs generally start in the four-figure range, creeping into five with larger sizes and options.
