Explaining a Video That Seemingly Shows "Checkered Paint" Being Applied

This video is making the rounds and blowing people's minds. Have a look, and see if you can deduce what's happening:

No, it's not "checkered paint."

The workpiece is a carbon fiber component that, prior to the "painting" action you see in the video, was already treated with resin. This workpiece was then sanded, and the sanding marks obscure the pattern beneath.

When the new coat of resin is applied, it fills all of the microscopic—and light-scattering—sanding marks in the original coat of resin, yielding a flat, windshield-like surface that allows you to clearly see the carbon fiber pattern.
