Always a boundary-pusher, Belgian designer and computational design fan Peter Donders created this Spherene Side Table:
That's not what it looked like when it came out of the printer, of course. The experimental furniture piece was SLA 3D printed out of Accura, a tough, flame-retardant resin that offers both durability and, after cleanup, a fine surface finish.
As with much of Donders' work, this was designed less as a production piece, and more to demonstrate the role that advanced computational modeling can have in material optimization. The sturdy table, which measures 450mm (17.72") in all three dimensions, weighs just 3.8kg (8.4 lbs). Donders and 3D Systems, the South-Carolina-based 3D printing company, collaborated on the showpiece.
