This new LifeStraw Escape is a portable high-flow water purifier that can hold 5.25 gallons. It's a heckuva lot larger than LifeStraw's signature product and, uniquely, offers pressurization. Competing models are gravity-fed, meaning you have to wait for the water to trickle down through the filters; but the Escape features a hand pump, and once you've pressurized the unit, it will deliver over a liter of purified water per minute.
The company says the three-stage filter will remove 99.99% of viruses, 99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites, and 99.999% of microplastics. As for maintenance, the pre-filter only needs to be regularly washed; the carbon and ion filter should be replaced every 600 liters/159 gallons or two months; and the membrane ultrafilter lasts a whopping 18,000 liters/4,755 gallons—"enough to support a household of 4 for up to 5 years in a survival situation."
In order to keep the filters cleaner for longer, there's a backwash syringe. If you notice the water flow getting slow, you fill the syringe with clean water, and inject it back into the tank. This forces water backwards through the filter, clearing sediment that you can then dump.
As the pump is hand-powered, there's no electricity required. Meaning the Escape should appeal to campers, overlanders and of course, disaster preppers.
It weighs 16 lbs empty and about 60 lbs full, and features keg-like handles so it can be carried by one or two people.
It runs $330. The carbon-ion filter replacements are $26, and the ultrafilter replacements run $50.
