It's a shame that package designers can determine the shape of a bottle or container, but never its volume; the manufacturer firmly dictates that your PET screw top has to hold, say, 24 ounces, or 700 milliliters for the European version. Submit a smaller design if you would like to be fired.
I bring this up because the holidays are upon us, many of us are about to engage in gluttony, and that in turn reminded me of a 2006 study in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine that discovered an obvious truth: Give people a bigger bowl and bigger spoon, and they'll eat more.
You can download the study here, and you also might want to take a gander at the "Food Portion Size, 20 Years Ago vs. Today" article that's been circulating for at least as many years and which visually represents how portions and packages have been growing in size for decades. Did you know McDonalds' original hamburger was only 1.5 ounces, or that Coke grew from 8 ounce bottles to 12 ounce cans to 20 ounces today?
If you wanna be kind to your guests' waistlines this season...give 'em a smaller plate.
