Mac Funamizu's USB drive concept lets you see the data

I'm lovvvvving Mac Funamizu's USB Memory Stick #6 concept, which would be made out of glass and provide a rather novel form of feedback. The idea is that lights of different colors--pink for images, blue for documents, green for movie files, for example--would accumulate as you added files, letting you "see" how much data, and what sort, you had on the thing.

My only gripe with the concept is the same gripe I have with other USB drive concepts, which is the same gripe I have with automobile ads: Most car commercials show their vehicle driving down a deserted country lane, not stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic on the West Side Highway. Similarly, USB drive concepts are typically portrayed as being the only thing plugged into your computer, and on my octopus-like MacBook Pro I can't fit anything in an available USB slot unless it's the exact width of the slot itself.

Seems like a problem with the Mac not the peripheral

Rumor mill: iPhone 4G to have a glass back?

Unimaginative, purely speculative concept renderings of the iPhone 4G can be found all over the web, and they're essentially the iPad scaled down, with the aluminum unibody and everything. But one technical problem that makes an aluminum-backed iPhone unlikely is that the metal would block incoming signals. Over the weekend Engadget...

Book scanning technology: What a difference five years makes

Here's what the state-of-the-art in book scanning looked like circa 2005--a vacuum-based page turner and an overhead camera: Here's the ScanRobot SR300 from 2008, which could do 2,400 pages an hour: Now a Tokyo University research team led by Masatoshi Ishikawa has developed an even better, faster way, by using software to...

LED wheels: Is it possible to harness this awful design trend for good?

Okay so they've got these "Pimpstar" car wheels with fairly mindless programmable messages: Then there are these BlueGear self-reporting fans, cooling fans for gaming PCs that numerically display the rotation speed and temperature (of the hard drive, I'm assuming): So I got to thinking: Is it possible to install some combination of...

    Ultimate tailgating products

Of the thousands of people streaming through Milan right now, I wonder how many of them have ever been to an American tailgating party. Actually, I just stopped wondering because I think I know the answer. For you non-Americans, a tailgating party is a social event that takes place in the...
