Say what you want about Stick Figure Man--that he is bland, featureless and boring--but he's one tough sonuvabitch. I mean this guy falls down, gets electrocuted, hit by trains, mugged, and has iron girders dropped on his head, but somehow still manages to tell you where the bathroom is. Not to mention he's a world traveler.
I have always wanted to put up a photo gallery of Imperiled Icons from around the world, because I love how designers from different cultures all boil potential danger and injuriousness down to the most simple, yet specific, depiction of calamity possible.
But my collection is pitifully small, as when traveling I almost never had my camera at the right time. (The best ones I ever saw were in Japan. One on a train featured a conductor's face, grimacing as a fist punched it, with a big red X over it. I'm guessing the Japanese written under it said "Please don't punch the conductor in the face.")
So, I need your help! Please e-mail a shot of an Imperiled Icon near you to
email@example.com Subject: "Icon" (to beat the spam filter)
No word balloons please, just the shot. Also list how you'd like to be credited and where the shot was taken, i.e. "TK from Sweden," along with a description if the nature of the calamity is not clear, like "This indicates not to stick a fork in the Hadron Supercollider."
I'll put together a gallery once enough images come in. Thanks in advance!
