As we wrote two weeks ago, we were very excited to see The Economist doing a story on the designers of the Glif, an iPhone tripod. We're even more excited to see they're following up on the story and revealing some unexpected developments, all of which should be interesting for any designers thinking of producing their own products.
The $70,000 that designers Tom Gerhardt and Dan Provost pulled in through Kickstarter has now swelled to nearly double that, and the production process is undergoing changes. More money means more opportunities:
- The designers have had to set up a separate company just to manage the money - The $5,000 mold from low-run injection molding company has been upgraded to a higher-production $15,000-$25,000 mold from a larger company - The designers now have to consider package design, and are commissioning a run of 10,000 boxes - They've discovered that the handling and packaging fees will cost more than the production of the actual object!
These bullet points are obviously a very condensed version of the story. We highly recommend you read the full tale, particularly if you want to design, manufacture and sell your own stuff.
