3 Artists Every Designer Should Know
My favorites have been Sir Anthony Caro, famous for his industrial sculpture, and David Smith (not to be confused with Tony Smith) who worked in a Studebaker factory during art school, and welded locomotives and M7 tanks during WW2.
Originally I was going to do "5 Artists". In that group were the three above plus Henry Moore and Alexander Calder... but the post got a bit long for a blog. I narrowed it down to these three based on the linear story they told. Thank you for reminding others about Moore though. Perhaps we should open it up to see what other artists cross many of our personal lists?

but I have such a great reaction to Henry Moore.
very well put. I was familiar with all three but to see them side by side in a short, concise not overly theorizing post was great.
It also reminded me to read up and Brancusi again.
we're at the point in time where the virtual image of the shiny is now replacing the artifact of the shiny, and that has changed the designers works... for better or worse is up to each to decide.
we know what the tool makers want to serve us... the question is who do designers want to serve.
