This month, Berlin-based contemporary design gallery Helmrinderknecht shows Flynn Talbot's X&Y, a dynamic light whose color and brightness properties are controlled by the hand blown, opaque roller ball that serves as its shade. To change the hue, spin on the X-axis; to dim, spin along the Y, as demonstrated above.
The lamp is minimal in its form, so that the changing quality of light is showcased. This simplicity, however, hides the sophisticated and compact technical resolution of the object—all controls and lighting elements are contained within the brass base, pictured below. Reminds us of the rollerballs on now outdated computer mice.
