An Empty Lot Becomes a Riverpark Farm in NYC
@Yankel - The short answer is probably not - from our research, mature wine grape roots reach anywhere from 6' to 15' in depth. These crates provide 1' of soil depth. However with further research there may be varietals that would be fine in these planters. On the positive side, the roots would receive plenty of oxygen through the porous crate openings and landscaper's fabric. Definitely worth testing.
@Belinda Gallagher - thank you. Please, let your students know they are welcome to forward any questions they have.
There is a garden in Berlin, Germany that has been around for a while now. I am sure they got the idea from there. Even US politicians paid them a visit recently to see how to do this on their home soil. Check out their blog too.
