Embark: Navigating NYC Subways via Good Design
But I'm sorry: Vignelli's iconic 1972 map was a lovely wall poster, but a mediocre map. The key thing to remember is that people want to get themselves from one actual location in the city to another location in the city. No one really wants to travel from one subway station to another subway station. The Vignelli map was far too abstracted to give a sense of one's actual location in the city, as are the several iPhone apps that follow its approach. The semi-representational maps may be kind of ugly and lumpy, but wow, they are much more useful in everyday NYC life.
