The budget for the U.S. Department of Defense is precipitously close to plunging headfirst down the impending 'fiscal cliff' that's making headlines these days, but thankfully the folks at DARPA, the Pentagon's R&D division, have already set aside at least a few million bucks to develop the next generation of tactical vehicles, and they're looking to reward a few lucky taxpayers with cash prizes for their savoir-faire. According to Program Manager Lt. Col Nathan Wiedenman, DARPA is "seeking to engage innovators outside of the traditional defense industry."The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is calling on innovators with expertise in designing and engineering drivetrain and mobility systems to collaboratively design elements of a new amphibious infantry vehicle, the Fast, Adaptable, Next-Generation Ground Vehicle (FANG)...
Each of the three planned challenges will focus on increasingly complex vehicle subsytems and eventually on the design of a full, heavy amphibious infantry fighting vehicle that conforms to the requirements of the Marine Corps' Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV). In the course of the design challenges, participants will test DARPA's META design tools and its VehicleFORGE collaboration environment, with the ultimate goal of demonstrating that the development timetable for a complex defense system can be compressed by a factor of five...
Many current approaches to the development of heavy military vehicles have proven inadequate for the timely delivery of much-needed capabilities to the warfighter. FANG's primary goal is to fundamentally alter the way systems are designed by decoupling design and fabrication and using foundry-style manufacturing to compress the development process timeline.
The first challenge focuses on "Mobility & Drivetrain," will launch two weeks into 2013, with a tentative submission deadline of April 15, 2013. The winning design will be realized at the iFAB Foundry, with a $1m cash prize for the winning team.
DARPA is looking to launch the second challenge, for the "Chassis & Structure" of FANG, in late 2013; the final challenge, to develop a full vehicle is slated for 2014, with higher stakes. In addition to double prize money, "the winning team in the third and final challenge could have its vehicle tested by the Marine Corps alongside ACV prototypes in operational testing."

I believe that for any problem there is a perfect resolution, but until humankind finds it, it stick to that current solution, good or bad.
military conflicts are a primitive way of treating conflicts, as I pointed before. It looks like we have to go deep to the core of the problem and change the way we think.
We're far from that wisdom, though...secularism is not going to help, nor the religious extremism. I think there is always a huge moral implication everytime when we're talking about guns.
I see few people around here actually opposing guns, they rather conform to the idea that guns could be also good in an invasion situation. true and false. let's not forget that invaders are humans too, and unfortunately they think the same. and this is how the military conflicts are generated.
so how come (explain me please!) it is possible a treaty between the big powers to not use and develop nuclear weapons, but we still talk about designing military vehicles and fire arms? well, fear is the explanation. fear and hypocrisy. for that kind of big threat that can go out of control, they can say "NO", but they agreed to keep some other "toys". this is so imature.
the sad part is they are still using people like us to make all the work for them...in our case, design, in other's...their lives on the field.
so, as I stated before: if you believe in a better world for us and for our kids, then just say "NO" to any project that involves military research. and let's ask our governments to stop this primitive way of thinking...educate them, and don't let them manipulate you.
If an outside force sought to do you or your family harm, would you roll over or fight for your life? I agree it's a last resort often hastily decided to become a first resort, but in a true conflict, violence is necessary to protect what's yours. It's been this way for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of years, and is a by-product of the human condition.
Love it or hate it, that's how we're wired.
It's good to see that the military industrial complex is starting to see problems with their inefficient ways, if he US is going to spend as much as they do on defense - they might as well get results
It doesn't matter if you use strong words to condemn the weaponery, or if you're just rejecting them pollitically correct.
And it doesn't matter if weapons are justified by the human nature; it is pretty obvious that humans have created the guns in the first place, not viceversa. So, only humans could put an end to this. Is just that we're still in a very primitive stage, morally speaking;as you can see, most of the conflicts are solved by using guns. it is stupid and primitive, but that's the world now, not too different than 3000 years ago... despite all the technological and science advance and despite all the evidences that God didn't want us to destroy ourselves...It requires some effort from our side as well. But it seems that humanity needs more time to achieve that wisdom.
So, don't get involved in designing guns, if you feel like this is the right action. I'm all of your side!
But remember: no matter how you look at it, we're all part of this since we all pay taxes (doesn't matter to what government) that will be used for all this military research. Ironicaly, you're contributing for paying the first prize of this contest...
So...chillax, be a good citizen and try to enrich your spiritual life.
don't get involved as a designer in any military project. and if you're a good designer, design something good at heart.
cheers
Fuck this!
