Hatch Live, the New York City-based live Rhino 3D design competition powered by Hatch Hub, kicked off on October 19th with a first round of eight students and is now moving toward its semi-final battles. We're pleased to present a behind-the-scenes look at the competitors, battles and winning designs that have led us up to the semi-finals. The winner of Hatch Live will walk away with the Grand Prize of $4,000 and a brunch/portfolio review with Dan Rubenstein, former Editor in Chief of Surface Magazine.
More prizes up for grabs from Shapeways and Hatch Hub include the Shapeway's Staff Favorite Prize and a "Designer in Residence" at the Shapeways' OUT OF HAND/HANDS ON interactive space at the Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design.
Ronald T. Labaco, Curator of Out of Hand, explains: "As an institution that seeks to demystify the process of making, the HANDS ON lab provides a tangible means of experiencing the digital design and fabrication process." The Shapeways Staff Favorite from Hatch Live will have the opportunity to showcase their modeling and printing skills in a fully interactive environment within the space—courtesy of 3D printing marketplace and community Shapeways—for one week.Round 1 kicked off with competitors Wil and Austin going against each another in the "Table" category. Both of the competitors designed their products in less than 90 minutes, switching back-and-forth and "one-upping" each other's design with Wil walking away with the win. Later that day, Liz and Nick competed in the "Seating" category with Nick's unique chaise seating design taking the win.
Additional first round matches took place on November 2nd, with designers Paul and Nelson each creating a pitcher within a closed 14” × 6” × 6” space; the latter took the win with his iceberg inspired design. November 2nd also saw competitors Ruben and Peter go head-to-head in their unique challenge, "Modular Storage Systems." Peter and Ruben worked together to build each other's designs as the rounds progressed leading up to a win for Ruben. The judging panel included Hatch Hub's Founder and CEO Matthew and Vice President of Design Meg, along with designer Simon Enever.
November 16th brings us to the semi-finals! Competitors will go head-to-head in two new categories, "Cart" and "Folded Chair" to see who will be going through to the finals on November 23rd to compete for the Grand Prize.
Limited tickets will be available to the public to watch the semi-finals and admission is free.
Tickets for the semi-finals are free (but limited)—reserve yours to see Wil and Nick or Nelson and Ruben at Eventbrite.
