Creating an IKEA Alternative in America
Does anyone else think this looks amazingly uncomfortable?
Looks uncomfortable and a bit pricy for what is.
Great article and a noble effort. I'm looking forward to seeing the product.
My problem with Ikea furniture is the cheapness of most of it. Chest of drawers that shift when you move them, stool legs that constantly need tightening, table legs that wobble and uncomfortable sofa stuffing. I have put a moratorium on Ikea in my house as my wife loves the look of it but to me it's throw away furniture.
It will be interesting to see if the Greycork stuff has the same wobbly, shifty cheapness that Ikea has. If the Greycork stuff was solid and durable I would buy it over Ikea in a heartbeat.
That is why as soon as I got a much better paying design job, I treated myself to bedroom furniture from West Elm. The quality to me is a lot higher; well constructed from real wood/wood veneers (veneers are NOT mdf or necessarily cheap as even expensive wood furniture have veneers) and comfy. Sure, it was a heck of a lot more expensive than IKEA and I could furnish an entire apartment with IKEA for what I paid for my bedroom set (even if I still don't have living room furniture), BUT at least I know it is quality, and will last forever. Can you pass down IKEA to your kids (or would you want to?). I let go of my immediate gratification mentality and will buy a living room set once the bedroom is paid for (0 percent interest for 12 months).
