EOS launched the Formiga P100, the new entry level product in its range of plastics laser sintering machines. If you haven't come across EOS's machines before, they provide the usual layer-baser manufacturing approach, but use lasers to sinter powdered material -- whether that's nylon, glass filled nylon or the range of composite (such as aluminium or carbon based) materials available. The P100 has a build envelope of 200 mm x 250 mm x 330 mm and can create stable wall thickness down to 0.4mm. With many predicting the rise of Rapid or Direct Manufacturing, this class of machine is going to become common place. Interestingly, 23 parts of the machine have been laser-sintered, from the filling hopper for the plastic powder to the switch cover and two different pyrometer elements, just to name a few - its not self replicating, but its getting there.
I also got a chance to see the prototype machines from Desktop Factory , the real contender for the mainstream 3D part building market - it looks good people -- real good.
