Day One of CES started off with all the adrenaline and theatrics one would expect from Vegas. After hurdling massive flight delays last night and mob-sized crowds this morning, the Convention Hall offered welcome distraction. Personal, entertaining, and automated seemed to be the hot topics of the day. Intels mind-blowing display of multi-core processors and software was a true crowd pleaser. Enabling displays like the Personal Media Creation Booth where participants could perform and create music video -- I am so going back to make mine tomorrow!! -- Intel also raised the bar on integrated home technology. Think the fridge door is just meant for magnets? Their tactile screen technology could transform this appliance into a hub of information and exchange.
As expected, Motorola and Nokia both came out strong with a suite of total entertainment phones, stuffing them choc full of mp3 technology and networking capabilities. While Nokia focused more on fashion and integration - check out the minimal girlie BH-301 Bluetooth with exchangeable faces! Motorola presented more profound solutions. A new blogging feature will soon be integrated into Motorola interfaces, offering even more instant web access. They also showed a bike-operated phone charger. Harnessing kinetic energy, this concept is destined for emerging markets where electricity might be difficult, or expensive, to come by.
Belkin showed a somewhat over-designed designed line of cable management tools, and USB hubs --useful, but we moved past the orange blob, no? Most impressive was their partnership with iPod in creating the TuneStudio. This system allows musicians to simultaneously record individual stereo tracks onto their iPod and then transfer them to the computer.
Overall, an impressive bunch! Though my favorite remains the waste-land display put on by Qualcomm. Surrounded by ancient cell phones and Xerox machines buried in dust, they proclaimed to all the death of the old and the birth of the new.
