Furniture Design Basics: What is Edge-Banding, Why is It Used, How Can You Easily Apply It?
I get great results with my old Freud EB-100 benchtop hot air edgebander, which I picked up years ago for under $100 used, plus a bit more for a similar assortment of hand tools. It requires some occasional fussy tuneup, but I can band & trim enough plywood for a small kitchen in a few hours - surely no different than this fastcap system. For really big panels, or quick piece-or-two jobs, I use my trusty thrift-store travel iron - the Fast Edge probably beats that for speed and ease.
Seems surprising that some clever furniture manufacturer hasn't commissioned separate face-grain patterned edge veneers to complete the illusion when used appropriately...
