Should a Design Always Be as Minimal as Possible?
Less means more.
When it comes to product design it is very important to give users only needed features. Otherwise, they will feel overhelmed.
Here is a great article how to deploy minimalism into product design -

Leshttp://blog.kanbanery.com/konmarie-product-backlog-sparks-joy-kanbanery/ s means more. That's true. When it comes to product design it is the same. Here is a very goo article how to deploy minimalism into product design.
The secret is simple... Every element of a design should be there for a reason. Those reasons more often than not should be emotionally evoked once a the minimal practical function has been optimised. That's gold I just shared :)
The car argument makes no sense. This is a question about minimalism, yet neither the honda civic nor the BMW are minimally designed. BMW's until recently were minimally designed, and perhaps if honda civics weren't designed with halfhearted 'style', and were minimal they wouldn't have a more positive reputation themselves. Yes, BMW has a better brand image but this can't be said to be just because of an adequate 'emotional response' - Rolls Royce, 2000's Audis, 1990's bmw's and Mercs, Bentleys, Range Rovers, the Mercedes G-Wagen - are examples of cars designed minimally (or at least functionally) that have arguably higher reputations than BMW's of today.
I think you are talking about Car Stylist's here. An example of this would be a car that has fake vents that don't actually vent the air from the breaks or the engine, but have that perceived functionality in the styling of the vehicle.
Don't even get me started about that book ( I threw that thing away after the first chapter)...Really, a USB connector is the example?!!! Something that was developed by an engineer, How about that crappy round mouse that apple used to sell with the iMac's, that was just bad design all the way around!
Popular is relative here, Not everyone would agree that Apple computers are popular. They are definitely not as popular as computers that run windows if you count the numbers. Apple products are pretty boring actually.
Don't confuse desirability with marketing Bullshit! In your quote you are switching from a specific car to a brand. Be careful when you make comments like this.
