A possible western solution would eliminate the basket and use the bag itself when shopping? This would avoid expensive and bulky checkout equipment. The bag could be basket shape and made from brown paper? As plastic bags are considered not environmentally friendly! Having a 'scanner' attachment to a paper basket which is returned and used at checkout would solve 2b?
